Sermon for Easter 4, 26th Apr 2026

Welcome sisters and brothers and peace be with you. MAY the words on my lips and the meditations in our hearts be acceptable in your sight O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. <Amen>

Messages warning us about “scams” seem to be everywhere these days. Scam websites. Scam emails. Scam text messages. Scam phone calls. Unfortunately people are still falling prey to these crimes. A few days ago I read about a man in Australia who had unknowingly clicked on a link in an email he received following a phone call that he thought was from his bank. The call sounded real. The email looked real. It all appeared so trustworthy, but it was a thief - quiet, convincing, destructive, and his bank account was emptied.

That man later said something that I found deeply profound. He said,“I didn’t lose my money all at once. I lost it the moment I trusted the wrong voice.”

That sentence could be the opening line of today’s Gospel.

In John 10:1–10, Jesus speaks about sheep, shepherds, gates, and thieves. At first glance, it feels distant from our modern world - but listen closely, and it becomes very personal.

Jesus says, “The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep - the sheep hear his voice - and they follow him because they know his voice.”

Then He contrasts this with another voice: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”

Two voices. Two paths. Two outcomes.

The question at the heart of this passage is simple: Whose voice are you listening to? <PAUSE>

In Jesus’ time, sheep were completely dependent on their shepherd. They didn’t survive by instinct alone. They survived by listening.

A good shepherd didn’t drive the sheep from behind. He walked ahead of them. He called them. And the sheep followed - not because they were forced, but because they trusted his voice.

Jesus is saying: That is how I lead you.

Not by fear. Not by pressure. But by relationship.

He knows your name. He speaks to your life. He calls you forward.

But here’s our problem in today’s world - - - there are other voices. Voices that sound convincing. Voices that promise security, happiness, success. Voices that say, “Follow me because this is the best way.”

And Jesus is very clear: not all voices lead to life. <PAUSE>

Let’s be honest—those “thief” voices don’t usually sound evil. They sound reasonable.

“Your worth depends on your success.” “You’ll be happy if you just have more.”
“You’re on your own, look after yourself first.” “You’ll all be safer … if …”

These often scream into our everyday lives, and slowly, but surely, they steal treasures from us:

Peace.
Hope.
Joy.
Purpose.
Trust.

Like that man with the bank account, we often don’t realise what’s happening until something precious is already gone. <PAUSE>

Into this narrative, Jesus then says something extraordinary:

“I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved.”

In other words, Jesus is not just the shepherd who leads, He is also the gate who protects and saves. <PAUSE>

Then comes one of the most beautiful promises in all of Scripture:

“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Not just existence. Not just survival. abundant life. <Pause>

Now, abundant life doesn’t mean an easy life. It doesn’t mean no struggles, no doubts, no hardship BUT it does mean a life that is rooted in something deeper:

A life where you are known.

A life where you are guided.

A life where, even in difficulty, you are not alone.

It is the difference between being subjected to the rantings, bluster and nonsensical noise of the modern world OR being led by a voice that loves you. <PAUSE>

So how do we recognise the Shepherd’s voice? That’s the practical question, isn’t it?

In a world full of noise, how do we hear Jesus?

We learn to hear His voice the same way that sheep learn to recognise their shepherd, through familiarity. Through time spent with Him.
In Scripture, where His voice is clear and steady.
In prayer, where we recognise His tone.
In quiet moments, when we stop long enough to listen.

Then, over time, something remarkable happens.

We begin to notice that His voice doesn’t sound like the others.

It doesn’t accuse us - it invites, generously.
It doesn’t force us - it leads, gently.
It doesn’t confuse us - it clarifies, calmly.
It doesn’t destroy us it gives life, freely.

Let me say this plainly:

If a voice in your life is leading you toward fear, emptiness, confusion or despair - it is NOT the true Shepherd.

If a voice is drawing you toward abundant life, truth, peace, hope and love - it is Him. <PAUSE>

Today, Jesus stands before us and says:

“I am the gate.” “I am the shepherd.”
“My sheep hear my voice.” “I came that you may have life.”

This invitation from Jesus is simple, but profound:

Listen.
Recognise.
Follow.

Because in a world full of competing voices, only one leads to life and He is already calling your name.

I runga e te Ingoa o te Atua, te Matua, te Tama me te Wairua Tapu. <AMINE>

Pause and Reflect

Just take a moment now to pause. Bow your head, close your eyes.

Allow these words of Holy Scripture and this interpretation of them today to speak to you.

An Affirmation of Our Faith

Let us affirm our faith by saying aloud, and together, "The Apostles Creed":

... and now let us pray for the Church, the World, and Ourselves, giving thanks for God's sacrifice and goodness.

Let us pray aloud, and together:

Lord, You are our Shepherd and we pray that you will protect us from all danger by keeping watch over us, guide us towards green pastures where we can be nourished by Your word and lead us to pure still waters where  we can be refreshed by your love.

<longer silence for personal reflection>

Lord, You are our Shepherd and we pray for the leaders of our faith communities that they too may care for and lead us by following the example of love and service You demonstrated in Your earthly ministry.

<short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd and we pray for the world that was given to us as an inheritance, on the understanding that we would care for it as shepherds care for their flocks.  Teach us to look after our beautiful planet and care for it wisely, whilst sharing its gifts more fairly and working together with all of its inhabitants to ease its sufferings.

<short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd and in this world which often seems filled with antagonism, division, mistrust and hatred - we pray for world peace in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We pray for countries, and particularly their elected leaders, to find diplomatic solutions that will bring harmony between nations.

We pray for wars to end.

We give thanks for Your promise that one day there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Until that day, we pray for your continued grace and goodness to overflow in this world so that humans can live alongside one another respectfully, allowing for mutual flourishing.

<short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd and we pray for our families, friends and all who need to hear the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd; who knows every one of them by name; who offers rest to the weary and salvation to sinners and life eternal to all who accept him into their lives.

<short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd who seeks out the lost and the sick.  We pray for those we know who are lost in illness and ask you to reassure them with the knowledge that you are watching over them in their suffering and that many are praying for their recovery.

Give the song of joy to all who are now on the road to recovery and recuperation and the song of thanks to all who helped them on that road.

We especially raise before You now all those who have asked for our prayers from around the world … those we know in New Zealand, in Singapore, in Argentina, in France, in Australia, in the US, in Canada, in Austria, in Ukraine, in China, in Germany, in the Czech Republic, and any others we now name aloud, or in the silence of our hearts, and those who are known only by You.

<short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd so we pray for those who have died and for those who ache with sorrow in their loss of a loved one.  May those we now name before you find rest in the Spirit’s embrace as You welcome them into the great sheepfold, safe in Your keeping for ever

We especially raise before you at this time our recently departed sister and brother, Janet (New Zealand), Peter (UK).

We pray for all the faithful departed, may they now rest in eternal peace as they most surely have risen in glory.

<Short silence> Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

In a moment of silence we pray for ourselves, our families, friends, for all whom we love and for our personal ministries.

Make us worthy of the sacrifice and resurrection of Your Son.

(Short Silence) Lord, in Your mercy: hear our prayer

Lord, You are our Shepherd, and we thank You for this time of prayer. In the week ahead we ask You to lead us down the streets of our towns and villages and guide us safely along the roads we travel.

(Short Silence) Lord, in Your mercy: hear our prayer

Forth in the peace of Christ we go; Christ to the world with joy we bring; Christ in our minds, Christ on our lips, Christ in our hearts, the world’s true King.

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of Your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  AMEN.

Remembering that we are confident to pray this day, and every day, because Jesus Christ continues to teach us:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,

your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.   Amen.

Let us conclude our prayers by praying together and aloud:

God of mercy,
you have given us grace to pray with one heart and one voice,
and have promised to hear the prayers
of two or three who agree in your name,
fulfil now, we pray,
the prayers and longings of your people
as may be best for us and for your kingdom.
Grant us in this world to know your truth,
and in the world to come to see your glory. Amen.

The Blessing

May The Risen Lord Christ turn His face towards each and every one of you.

May He cause His light to shine upon you, and

may He grant you His peace, and

The blessing of Almighty God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

be with you and all of those whom you love,

on this day and forever more.

A Closing Hymn:

Let us conclude our worship today by watching, and please do feel free to sing or read aloud the lyrics, as we unite in another hymn our praise and thanksgiving.
